Beta-cyclodextrin and cholesterol: the discoveries
Beta-cyclodextrin captures cholesterol wherever it meets it. In dairy science it strips cholesterol from milk fat and cream; in the diet it carries cholesterol and bile acids out of the body and lowers plasma lipids; and its soluble derivative dissolves the cholesterol crystals inside arterial plaque.
The evidence atlas
| Discovery | Evidence | What was found |
|---|---|---|
| Cholesterol stripped from milk fat | Dairy science | Beta-cyclodextrin added to milk captured cholesterol into a complex that the separator removed, leaving the milk's fatty-acid and triglyceride composition unchanged.[1] |
| Low-cholesterol cheese | Dairy science | Cheddar made from beta-cyclodextrin-treated cream reached a higher rate of cholesterol removal and ripened faster.[2] |
| A net lipid-lowering diet | Animal study (rat) | Dietary beta-cyclodextrin strongly increased the excretion of steroids and bile acids and lowered plasma lipids, even at 2.5 % of the diet.[3] |
| Less cholesterol stored in the liver | Animal study (pig) | On a cholesterol-enriched diet, beta-cyclodextrin reduced liver cholesterol storage in a dose-dependent way and tripled the faecal output of bile acids — the body's main route for disposing of cholesterol.[4] |
| LDL down by more than a quarter | Animal study (pig) | With Lactobacillus acidophilus, beta-cyclodextrin lowered total serum cholesterol by 17.9 % and LDL cholesterol by 27.9 % in three weeks.[5] |
| Cholesterol crystals in plaque dissolved | Animal study (mouse) + human plaque tissue | The hydroxypropyl derivative reduced plaque size and cholesterol-crystal load and made plaques regress even on a continued cholesterol-rich diet.[6] |
| Oxidised cholesterol pulled out of foam cells | Cell study (macrophage foam cells) | Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin solubilised 7-ketocholesterol far more strongly than cholesterol and drew it out of the lipid-laden cells that build plaque.[7] |
Why the diet result matters
The body removes cholesterol mainly by turning it into bile acids. In pigs on a cholesterol-enriched diet, beta-cyclodextrin multiplied the faecal output of bile acids by three and reduced the cholesterol stored in the liver, in a dose-dependent way[4]. In rats it lowered plasma lipids even at 2.5 % of the diet[3], and combined with a probiotic it cut LDL cholesterol by 27.9 % in three weeks[5].
Why the plaque result matters
Advanced plaque is full of cholesterol crystals, and the crystals inflame the artery wall. The hydroxypropyl form of the ring dissolved those crystals, reprogrammed the plaque's macrophages to export cholesterol, and made plaques regress even while a cholesterol-rich diet continued[6]. It also draws the most toxic oxidised sterol, 7-ketocholesterol, out of foam cells[7].
